Investing in you: your biggest financial asset

If you have to remember only one thing from this website, probably this is the most important thing to remember: You are your most important asset.

And the reason is quite obvious since YOU will be the only thing permanent in your life (You'll be always in your life) , that's the only fact you can take for granted.

As a financial asset your personal aim has to be to Increase your ability to earn. The last golden rule from The Richest Man in Babylon .

To increase your ability to earn you have to acquire knowledge or skills that can be sold for money.

Below some ways to acquire these skills and knowledge.

Education

Education is probably the first step stone in order to acquire knowledge and skills that have some value in the market place. But, we have to choose carefully. There could an oversupply of the skills we will learn and that would leave us in a really bad position. Or, even worse, we will acquire knowledge that can be easy replaced by common sense.

If you are thinking about going to University or learning a specific profession I recommend you read "which profession to choose" before you go ahead with your decision.
I would have paid some good money for this advice when I was 18 and I decided to study Advertising :)

Learning is a life process

Studying is not the only way to learn, some people stop learning new things and developing new skills when they finish college. Your knowledge and skills become obsolete if you stay still, nowadays things change very very quickly. If you stay still, you'll be out of date before you blink. If you are eager to develop your skills and learn you'll find a lot of opportunities to grow personally and financially.

Be a self-learner! Don't wait for someone to teach you something. Information is nowadays more available to you than it has been ever before. With a laptop and internet connection you can do almost everything apart from cooking. Find out which knowledge or skill you want to develop and go for it.

That said, I'd like to introduce you to...

Your biggest enemy: Comfort Zone

Boredom and routine are the two magic ingredients that make that millions of people every day wake up to go to a job they hate (I've been there).

You are unhappy, depressed and unmotivated by your job, but it's so damned comfortable, you already know all you need to know and the level of effort you have to put in is minimal. Your brain is so dead after work that the only thing you want to do is to sit on the couch and watch TV for the next 4 hours...

Get out of your comfort zone! Try to learn new skills in your free time and try to change your job, learning has to be an enjoyable process. Regarding this I have to recommend: Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life .

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is noted for his work in the study of happiness and creativity, but is best known as the architect of the notion of flow and for his years of research and writing on the topic.
